BUSH ON TERROR

Here's the transcript of the speech the president gave today at the National Endownment for Democracy. While some have argued that there was "nothing new", I think the entire structure of the speech, weaving all the incidents of jihadist violence together into one comprehensive message is much better than focusing on just Iraq or Afghanistan. By defining terror as a broader and global phenomenon it should enable the administration to better explain the Iraq strategy to a wider audience. Even Theo van Gogh made an appearance in it, although the quote Bush used was incorrect.

The other thing it will do is return the president to foreign policy, an area where Bush is decidedly more comfortable as we've learned over the past few weeks.

UPDATE: Donald Sensing has analyzed the speech and thought it was one of Bush's finest.

CLARIFICATION: The quote during the Van Gogh trial was:

He argued that he did not kill her son out of hate, "but I have chopped off his head according to the law that orders me to do so to everyone who offends Allah. I do not not feel your pain as I do not know what it is to suffer the loss of a child"

Bush embellished it by saying:

"I do not feel your pain -- because I believe you are an infidel."
Fact-checking remains a bit sloppy over at The White House.
