A PERFECT DAY

Is the Lou Reed song that was played at the end of Theo Van Gogh’s farewell ceremony earlier today. If you want to have an idea of what went on – including speeches from his parents, sisters and friends – go here and click on Theo’s portrait for a short video clip. It’s all in Dutch but it will give you an idea of what went on. The most impressive bit surely was Theo mother’s eulogy who expressed the deepest anguish that can befall a mother:

“We have gathered here because our child is dead, murdered”

To conclude that:

“The barbarian has robbed us of the thing that was dearest to us”

Zacht Ei has more, including a translation of one of Holland’s most famous poems which was read by one of Theo's sisters. It was written by a Dutch resistance fighter during the German occupation and ends as follows:

“A people which to tiranny consents

Will lose more than life and land

Then light relents”
