DISLODGING THE ISLAND TYRANT?

It was only a matter of time and campaigning in Florida yesterday proved to be the right moment for Bush to call for Fidel Castro to be removed from power:

"We will continue to press hard and ensure that the gift of freedom finally reaches the men and women of Cuba. We will keep the pressure on until the Cuban people enjoy the same freedoms in Havana they receive here in America. I strongly believe the people of Cuba should be free from the tyrant," he said, triggering furious applause and chants of "Viva Bush!"

It’s no doubt great campaigning but Cuban refugees have been hearing this message now for over forty years. Those striving for freedom on the island must be wondering what it will take to remove the aging Fidel Castro. It’s been a while since Soviet support evaporated and the island economy is in a worse shape than ever. It may indeed be something a second Bush administration might want to look into more seriously, if only to honor its campaign promises.
